You have two choices as to your final project. Please pick one and begin work on it as soon as you can. We will select some of each, with your permission to be shared with the class online and the subject of panel discussions with leaders. Your project is due May 3. If you have questions, please direct them to: leadership@interlochen.org.
OPTION 1 Assessing leadership in your community
One of the important parts of leadership is learning to watch leaders in your own community and the organizations they manage. What is their track record? How do they communicate? What was their training and preparation? How and why have they been successful? What are the challenges that their organization—and their leadership—face in the future? What is their advice to young leaders?
Your assignment in “understanding local leadership” will be to pick a leader/organization in the arts in your community. Meet with that leader, interview them, do research on their organization, and ask them the questions we have posed above—or develop additional questions of your own. Prepare a written report of your interview with narrative of what you heard and learned about the questions you asked in the interview.
OPTION 2 Presentation of student leaders and their experiences
This assignment will ask you to reflect on your own leadership. Some of you may already be leaders in your schools, in organizations, or have founded a non-profit or community/school based organization. Prepare a presentation to be shared with other LALI students about your own leadership roles and activities. In particular, what are the challenges you faced as a leader in this endeavor, how have you grown, who helped you to learn to lead, and what experiences do you see that you will need in the future to enhance your leadership skills. This can take the form of a video, powerpoint, collection of visuals, podcast, etc.

Some questions to consider:
Rachel Slotnick says, “I learned everything by asking questions. That is the golden nugget to anything in life. Put your ego aside.” It’s easy to see someone else’s ego on display, but have you ever let your own pride — or shyness — affect a project you were passionate about?
What are Michael Thurber’s four pieces of advice for young leaders?
Towards the end of the webinar, Kyle Ballarta talks about the difference between success and significance. Do you think one is more important than the other?
What kind of opportunities led Mike, Rachel, and Kyle to recognize their mentors? How did such relationships help them develop their strengths, and what lessons did they learn from a mentor/mentee relationship?
Our panelists agree that high school and college is the time in your life to take risks. In what ways are you getting the most of your educational experience?
How did involvement in the arts equip these young leaders for their roles as entrepreneurs and collaborators?
